Хураангуй: The number of patients diagnosed with and suffering from major depressive disorder (MDD) has been increasing in recent years around the world. Standard diagnosis of MDD is performed following an examination by a medical attendant, and often raises various concerns, including false responses by patients, subjective factors, and inexperience of the attendants leading to incorrect diagnoses. Furthermore, nearly half of the patients suspected to have MDD are reported to deter to consult their doctors for their symptoms1). To avoid such incidents, we have developed an innovative self-monitoring system for MDD, entitled “UTSUKAMO”, adopting new diagnostic criteria based on heart rate variability (HRV). This simple, user-friendly system is low cost and it is easy to be installed into households, workplaces, and medical facilities. Successful collaboration of art and medical engineering students from Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU) and The University of Electro-Communications (UEC), led to the completion of the exterior and the inner system design, an effort that was supported by Vital Lab Co. Ltd in Japan. The system is in its final stages and it is envisaged to be marketed in the near future.
